I am incredibly grateful for my experience during my master's program at ACM. It was there that I embarked on a journey of turning ideas into reality. Developing a project plan which was in my brain for years, I found a legit reason now to make time for it and took the leap and finally put my thoughts on paper. Little did I know, a year and a half later, I would find myself touring schools with that very project. What began as a tryout, supported by minimal funds, has blossomed into a fulfilling endeavour. Shout out to all the individuals who supported me along the way, especially the dedicated tutors. Their professionalism, optimism, and practical guidance were instrumental in navigating the challenges of the program and ultimately seeing it through to completion. Now, when I speak, I do so as someone with the knowledge and expertise gained from my ACM education. This validation has empowered me to advocate confidently for my work and its impact. In retrospect, I am humbled by the opportunities and growth I’ve made the last few years.

Specifically for me, I knew I was going to be using Unity to create some kind of 3D sound experiment but I was really unsure for the large majority of it. When it comes to project work, having the ability to do literally whatever you want is hugely freeing and the support in bringing your creative ideas to life is great, with tutors specialising in almost anything, and if they can't help they'll know someone who can. I applied for jobs in software engineering a few months after graduating and [was] lucky enough to pass an interview and enrol in The Roke Academy - an opportunity which provided on the job training as a software engineer before being deployed onto customer based projects. Now, just over a year after graduating I am working as an engineer in the National Security business unit at Roke and have been in the position for 9 months! So all in all it's been a very successful year post graduation!

You’ll be invited to present your work, contribute to projects, and hear what the real leaders in the creative industries are saying about your fields.

Tobias presented his research on Enhancing Sustainability and Career Progression for young musicians in the UK, highlighting the multifaceted skill set required to thrive in the industry, including social media management, graphic design, and business skills. He identified significant issues such as a high dropout rate, insufficient income, and mental health challenges exacerbated by unstable careers. Through his ongoing research, he aims to develop a national curriculum to enhance career progression and sustainability for musicians, incorporating data from surveys and interviews with industry professionals.

Russ Kwame spoke about his journey from an organically developed passion for music in Ghana to significant roles in the UK music scene, including DJing and producing. His work transitioned into various roles at BBC One Extra and beyond, touching on TV presenting and voice-over acting. Recently, he has engaged with academia, reflecting on his practical experiences and the skills he has gained, which he now seeks to formalise and expand through a PhD in creative industries. Kwame emphasised the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and staying connected with youth culture to maintain relevance. His talk highlighted the evolving recognition of creative professions in academic and economic contexts, discussing his personal growth and the broader implications for aging artists seeking sustainable pathways in the creative industries.

Jeremy Silver was our esteemed guest presenter at the ACM Symposium 2023. Jeremy’s involvement in various start-ups, both as CEO and investor, led to his leadership of Digital Catapult. Towards a Digital Renaissance examines the interplay between state and private financing in the digital sector. The students found Jeremy’s talk enlightening and thought-provoking, mirroring the sentiments towards other speakers at the ACM Symposium. This annual event aimed at Post Graduation students is a exciting fixture of our academic calendar.
