The BASCA Scholarship

The prestigious BASCA Scholarship rewards one songwriting student at ACM London, Birmingham or ACM Guildford with support for up to 3 years of study, worth £27,000

Announcing the BASCA Songwriting Scholarship.

The Academy of Contemporary Music is delighted to announce the continuation of its exclusive partnership with BASCA, offering ‘The BASCA Scholarship’ to one student deemed to have outstanding talent as a songwriter. The scholarship will fully fund a songwriter’s journey through the BA (Hons) Music Industry Practice (Creative Artist Pathway) programme at ACM Guildford and ACM Birmingham or the BA (Hons) Commercial Songwriting programme at ACM London, paying for their entire tuition fees for the duration of study.

BASCA is the official representative body for Songwriters in the UK, and so we at ACM are incredibly privileged to partner with them on this project.

BASCA exists to support, protect and celebrate music creators in the UK. They are the independent professional association representing songwriters and composers in all genres, whether they create song, symphony or sync.

In 2016, Tom Gortler took the prize at the BASCA Summer Party, where all of the finalists get to perform.

“I [was] over the moon to be even considered, just getting to the final three was enough for me, let alone win it, so thank you so much to the judges, ACM and everyone from BASCA for putting it on.”

Ivan Proctor, winner of the inaugural ACM BASCA Scholarship in 2015 was watching and said:

“I was absolutely thrilled to be awarded a full scholarship to ACM from BASCA. It has really inspired me to carry on doing what I love, which is songwriting! The amount of useful advice I have been given by BASCA members has been amazing”

“It just feels so amazing to have won the 2017 BASCA Scholarship. It’s a true honour and I’m so glad and so grateful to have even been here to perform my song. I’m just so chuffed, I have hardly any words but I thank God and I thank ACM for giving me this opportunity and to BASCA for setting this up, for considering me, let alone choosing me to win this – thank you so much. I look forward to working with both ACM and BASCA in the near future.”

“I’m so grateful to have been given this amazing opportunity, the other finalists were incredible so to have been chosen as this year’s recipient is a real honour”

The Scholarship prize, worth up to £27,000, is now open for applicants for 2018 study.

“One of BASCA’s core objectives is to encourage the next generation of songwriters and composers, and launching a scholarship programme with ACM is the perfect opportunity for us to help a young songwriter develop their skills.”

“We are delighted to announce the partnership between ACM and BASCA, and to be able to offer our most talented and promising students the chance of winning a scholarship. There is such an obvious synergy between BASCA’s work supporting songwriters and composers and our talented songwriting students. The scholarship scheme also fits perfectly with our belief that finance and circumstances should not be a barrier to any student fulfilling their potential. We are in the unique position of offering a truly end-to-end educational proposition, thanks to the intrinsic link between ACM and Metropolis, which gives our students the most genuine access to the real-world industry. Our aim is to give our gifted students a truly industry-based, world-class education, in an environment in which they have genuine, regular access to esteemed professional bodies and industry leaders in order to graduate from ACM with the highest level of practical employability.”
Kainne Clements Executive Chairman of ACM and Metropolis Studios

– a 500 word/2 minute description of songwriting process

How to apply for the BASCA Songwriting Scholarship:

1.If you have not done so already, apply to a relevant programme of study at either ACM Guildford or ACM London.  You may choose from the BA (Hons) Music Industry Practice (Creative Artist Pathway) programme at ACM Guildford and ACM Birmingham or the BA (Hons) Commercial Songwriting programme at ACM London.  Applicants to the Creative Artist Pathway including the ‘Level 0’ / Foundation Year precursor at ACM Guildford will also be accepted. Instructions can be found on our Apply page.

2. Complete our Audition process.  Successful candidates will be issued with an offer of study.  Return your offer of study and reply as FIRM via UCAS.

3. Send an email to with the subject Ivors Academy Scholarship Submission from < INSERT NAME >.  The email should contain a link to a video in which you perform a song that best shows your capabilities as a songwriter.  Be sure to introduce yourself in the video.  Before your song, tell us who you are, what your history is and what your ambitions are for the future.  Tell us what winning the Scholarship would mean to you.  For the purpose of this Scholarship, we are only able to consider one song per applicant and only songs that are written in their entirety by the applicant.  No collaborative work will be accepted, but it is acceptable to have other performers supporting the applicant in the form of a band.  Please note, as this is a songwriting scholarship, it is the quality of the song and not the quality of the performance or production that will be judged. That said, ACM encourages students to submit videos that demonstrate the best of all of their creative capabilities. Entries must be received by the end of Friday 31st May 2019.

4. Entries will be shortlisted initially by a panel of ACM judges, before being reviewed by members of the Ivors Academy board.  They will choose 3 finalists to perform live at their annual Summer Party (usually held in August), where the winner will be announced.

ACM and Ivors Academy would like to wish all of this year’s applicants the very best of luck!
