Here at ACM, we’d like to send a huge congratulations to 16-year-old Vocal Diploma student, Gilska Weerakkody, who has made it into the regional finals of the prestigious Open Mic UK competition – a national music search for the UK’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocal groups.

These finals will be held on Sunday 16th October at legendary North London venue, Dingwalls in Camden, and Gilska can’t wait for the next stage of the competition: “It feels amazing to have made the regional finals, especially considering there are over 10,000 entries each year. I feel very excited and proud of my achievement so far, because it was a very tough audition.”

But Gilska’s recent success doesn’t stop there! Aside from the Open Mic UK competition, she is also looking forward to performing in front of an audience of 10,000 at the SS Arena Wembley in London on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th March 2017, taking on a solo performance of ‘Let Me Entertain You’ at the Voice In A Million (VIAM) event to be held there.

Influenced by the vocal styles of Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Whitney Houston, Gilska joined ACM full-time in September on the Vocal Diploma course following her attendance at ACM’s part-time Band Academy.

“I chose to study at ACM after I attended the part-time Band Academy course and enjoyed it so much – I just couldn’t get enough of the fun, exciting learning environment and end-of-term band performance.”
