In this module, we investigate whether rhythm, harmony and melody exist independently, or whether they co-exist in a state of mutual musical interdependence. We explore whether their nature and use are best understood through analysis, or through inner reflection, and we identify and analyse the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic devices that can be used to create emotional and other effects in a song. We also consider how the use of scales and modes affect the perception of melody, and experiment with the use of keys and tuning as a way of enhancing the mood and atmosphere of different types of song.
