Saturday Course Entry Requirements - ACM

Kick start guitar

There are no requirements for this guitar course other than owing a guitar.

It starts at the very beginning and works up to being able to put chords together and actually start to be able to play songs. Anyone can join from age 12 and the course is repeatable as the tutor will taylor it to suit everyone’s needs.

Band skills foundation

Drummers.12 +

Will need an interest and desire to play drums and ideally will have had a go on a drum set at school or on a friends kit etc and be able to hold a very basic beat. He or she will need to own a pair of sticks and a pair of ‘over the ear’ DJ style headphones .

They do not need to be able to read music.

Guitarists 12+

Ideally will have completed the acm kickstart course or had a few private lessons or at school. Students should be able to play some basic chords such as E, G, D, A and C and attempted power or barre chords. They will need own an electric guitar (six sting only please) strap and a tuner.

They do not need to be able to read music .

Vocalists 12+

No previous experience needed but will have an interest in singing and not be too shy to try, someone that enjoys singing at home or at school.

They do not need to be able to read music

Bass players 12+

Ideally will have had a few private lessons or have been trying to play for a few months, would have been playing guitar for a while and fancy playing bass and can string a selection of notes together and can Physically hold the instrument.

Will need to own a bass guitar or have regular access to one for practice.

They do not need to be able to read music

Band skills Advanced

Drummers.12 +

Ideally will have completed a few terms of band skills foundation or have had private tuition or performed in a school or own band. Be a confident payer and have access to own drum set (could be electronic). He or she will need to own a

pair of sticks and a pair of ‘over the ear’ DJ style headphones .

They do not need to be able to read music.

Guitarists 12+

Ideally will have completed the Band skills foundation course and had a few private lessons or at school. Students will need to be able to play basic chords such as E, G, D, A and C, confidently paly barre and power chords and know some positions on the neck. They will need own an electric guitar (six sting only please) strap and a tuner.

They do not need to be able to read music .

Vocalists 12+

Vocalists will need some previous experience such as singing in a choir or at school and have a passion for singing, outgoing and a desire to perform.

They do not need to be able to read music

Bass players 12+

Bassists will ideally have completed the Band skills foundation course or will have had a few private lessons or been a competent guitar player for a while and fancy playing bass as an additional instrument

Will need to own a bass guitar or have regular access to one for practice.

They do not need to be able to read music

Band Academy 14+

Guitarists will need to be able to play Barre and power chords and be able to tune by ear and have a basic grasp of the notes on the neck. They will need to have had some previous experience in their instrument. And be confident to want to work with others in a band environment .

Bassists will need to be able to follow a basic chord chart so will need basic knowledge of the notes on the neck. Be able to stand up and play and be confident to work with others in a band environment.

Singers will need to be confident to sing in front of others and be able to perform as part of an ensemble and be willing to sing different genres of music. The course is mainly rock/pop/contemporary based. Singers will also be confident to work with others in a band environment.

Drummers will need to be confident players and will have had some private tuition or will have completed the Band skills advanced course. They will be outgoing and confident to perform as part of an ensemble and willing to take direction and have access to a practice facility (electronic kit will suffice).

Reading is not essential but will be  useful

Songwriting

A note book and pen or laptop will be very useful as well as a guitar if that is what you use when writing your songs. A phone with a record function or a Dictaphone will be very useful in order to document and record quick ideas etc.

Studio recording

No previous experience needed but an understanding of what goes on in a recording studio would be helpful, you do not need to be able to play any instruments but an understanding of what each instrument does would be useful.

Home recording in logic audio

No previous experience needed just a desire and an interest to be able to produce own music. A computer set up a home (although not essential) would be advantageous. Students do not need to be able to play an instrument.

Will need to bring a pair of headphones and a USB stick or USB hard drive.
