ROLE PURPOSE:

The Specialist Study Skills Tutor’s primary duties will be carried out in collaboration with staff across the Additional Needs and Disabilities department in ACM’s approach to inclusive practice, access and special education needs support for students on Higher Education programmes. The purpose of this role is to provide high-quality, specialist study skills support to students with additional needs and disabilities. The Specialist Study Skills Tutor will also work closely with members of the wider Integrated Services and Education departments to maintain connection between all areas of provision.

This position is a casual, PAYE role, with a pay rate of £40 per hour.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To work alongside other Additional Needs and Disabilities staff to provide specialist one-to-one study skills support to students with specific learning differences which may include: dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder, autistic spectrum disorder, mental health difficulties etc.;
  • To identify learning developmental needs for students; this is typically in line with diagnostic assessment reports and DSA2 letters;
  • To plan and deliver individual study skills tutorial, using a range of strategies to facilitate independent learning;
  • To regularly review with the student their study skills plan, and make adjustments accordingly;
  • To undertake accurate record keeping of study skills sessions delivered to each student, collecting the information required within DSA processes;
  • To liaise with other colleagues, where appropriate and necessary, in other student services areas to ensure well-rounded and thorough support to students with additional needs and disabilities;
  • To keep up to date with developments in the field of SpLD support for students in Higher Education;
  • To keep up to date with internal policy and regulatory developments within all areas of ACM’s provision, in order to deliver up-to-date and relevant advice where necessary;
  • To attend Additional Needs and Disabilities department meetings, and engage with staff across the institution as a member of the wider ACM team;
  • To provide reports on your daily activities to the Additional Needs and Disabilities Coordinator.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • An undergraduate degree or relevant professional equivalent;
  • Experience of planning and delivering 1:1 specialist study support to students in Higher Education;
  • Experience of teaching and incorporating multi-sensory skills within a 1:1 specialist study support setting:
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to interpret and explain complex processes/information to others
  • Ability to initiate and complete administrative tasks to a deadline;
  • Knowledge of legislation around disability and specific learning differences;
  • Working knowledge of legislation relating to data protection and equality and diversity;
  • Commitment to working within the policies of ACM and the regulations of its academic partners;
  • Quality Assured member of Association of Dyslexia Specialists in Higher Education OR AMBDA;
  • Awareness of mental health and anxiety issues associated with SpLDs.

 

 

Desirable

  • A teaching qualification;
  • Postgraduate-level specialism in an area of Specific Learning Differences (SpLD);
  • Knowledge of the OfS agenda for Access and Participation;

Safeguarding is of the highest importance to us and with this in mind, al ACM team members are required to undergo a DBS check prior to joining. This will require renewal on a three yearly basis. 

This job purpose reflects the core activities of the post. As the Department and the post-holder develop, there will inevitably be some changes to the duties for which the post is responsible, and possibly to the emphasis of the post itself. ACM expects that the post-holder will recognise this and will adopt a flexible approach to work.  This could include undertaking relevant training where necessary.  Should significant changes to the job purpose become necessary, the post-holder will be consulted and the changes reflected in a revised job purpose.
