ROLE PURPOSE:

The Specialist Mentor’s primary duties will be carried out in collaboration with staff across the Additional Needs and Disabilities department in ACM’s approach to inclusive practice, access and special education needs support for students on Higher Education programmes. The purpose of this role is to provide high-quality, specialist mentoring support to students with additional needs and disabilities. The Specialist Mentor will also work closely with members of the wider Integrated Services and Education departments to maintain connection between all areas of provision.

This position is a casual, PAYE role, with a pay rate of £40 per hour.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • To deliver the specialist sessions to students in line with accredited standards, and internal policies and procedures. The support recommended will vary on the needs of each student, in accordance with Disabled Students Allowance (DSA);
  • To provide individual interventions and support plans that help students address the barriers to learning created by a particular impairment, e.g. mental-health conditions, or autistic spectrum disorders including, but not limited to:
    • coping with anxiety and stress;
    • dealing with concentration difficulties;
    • time management;
    • prioritising workload and creating a suitable work-life balance;
  • To not act as an advocate or counsellor, but to help students recognise the barriers to learning created by their impairment and support them in developing strategies to address these barriers, particularly at times of transition, e.g. when starting at university or when planning to move on from it;
  • To liaise and coordinate support in conjunction with the wider ACM Integrated Services team, including referrals to wellbeing services and safeguarding;
  • To undertake accurate record keeping of intervention and support provided, keeping contemporaneous case notes. To ensure that records are kept in an appropriate manner, complying with relevant legislation e.g. Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act;
  • To keep up to date with internal policy and regulatory developments within all areas of ACM’s provision, in order to deliver up-to-date and relevant advice where necessary;
  • To attend Additional Needs and Disabilities department meetings, and engage with staff across the institution as a member of the wider ACM team;
  • To provide reports on your daily activities to the Additional Needs and Disabilities Coordinator.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

  • Accredited / Registered with BACP, UKCP, ACP, MBACP, BPC, HCPC, BPS, GMC, UMHAN or other relevant professional body.
  • An undergraduate degree or relevant professional equivalent;
  • Experience of planning and delivering 1:1 specialist mentoring support to students in Higher Education;
  • Understand the impact of the student’s mental health condition on their ability to learn
  • Understand the impact of medication on the experience of learning
  • An in-depth understanding of the effects of specific learning disabilities such as autism and ADHD on language and learning;
  • The skills to help students make use of their strengths and overcome barriers to learning;
  • An understanding of the demands of study at HE level;
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills;
  • Ability to interpret and explain complex processes/information to others;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to initiate and complete administrative tasks to a deadline;
  • Working knowledge of legislation relating to data protection and equality and diversity;
  • Commitment to working within the policies of ACM and the regulations of its academic partners;
  • Awareness of mental health and anxiety issues associated with Specific Learning dfficulties

Desirable

  • A teaching qualification;
  • Postgraduate-level specialism in an area of Specific Learning Differences (SpLD);
  • Knowledge of the OfS agenda for Access and Participation;
  • Experience of teaching and incorporating multi-sensory skills within a 1:1 specialist study support setting:

This job purpose reflects the core activities of the post. As the Department and the post-holder develop, there will inevitably be some changes to the duties for which the post is responsible, and possibly to the emphasis of the post itself. ACM expects that the post-holder will recognise this and will adopt a flexible approach to work.  This could include undertaking relevant training where necessary.  Should significant changes to the job purpose become necessary, the post-holder will be consulted and the changes reflected in a revised job purpose.
