We’re recruiting for a Head of Student Services.

Based at ACM Guildford, the salary bracket is between £40,000 and £45,000.

Role:                           Head of Student Services

Purpose:                    The Head of Student Services will be responsible fordeveloping, managing and reviewing effective and efficient Student Servicesprovision at ACM.

Aims of the post:

  • To develop and manage a Student Services Strategy that delivers and articulates ACM’s core objective of an excellent student experience delivered within an environment of high academic standards.
  • Working closely with the Education Executiveand wider Education Leadership Teamto ensure that the range of services are delivered consistently across campuses.
  • To ensure that all staff and all students are fully aware of the student hub services available and how these are accessed, managed, recorded and evaluated.
  • Managing, organising and delivering a range of enrichment events that include (but are not limited to) student celebrations, charity events, volunteering opportunities.
  • Managing and evaluating a range of general and specialist support and advice for students that include counselling, health advice, accommodation
  • Ensure students have access to student financeadvice and funding support opportunities.
  • Managing and evaluating the provision of a programme of tutorial talks that meet the health and well being and skills development agenda.
  • Facilitating student groups and associations.
  • Managing and facilitating opportunities for ‘student voice’ including development of ACM Student Union across all ACM campuses.
  • Managing strategy delivery including contributing to the development of systems and procedures to support ongoing student service excellence within ACM, and engender a culture of continual improvement, liaising and building networks with charities and groups across all campuses.


To achieve this, the post holder will:

  • Promptly review and assess existing ACM Student Services processes.
  • Work with colleagues to review a range of data and information sources to assess and forecast student service requirements in the short and long term.
  • Work with the ACM Education Executiveto recommend and secure strategic commitment and relevant resources.
  • Work across team boundaries within and outside ACM to coordinate the necessary commitment, expertise and input required to deliver ACM’s approach to student support.
  • Put in place appropriate feedback and monitoring arrangements to monitor success and guide improvement.
  • Manage the expectations of staff and students to ensure that ACM only promises what it can achieve.
  • Seek efficiencies in delivery that allow maximum impact within available resources.



The Head of Student Services will have responsibility for coordinating student support across the following areas, including line management responsibility where appropriate:

  • Student Hub across all ACM campuses;
  • Student welfare and retention;
  • Students’ Union;
  • Health services and wellbeing;
  • Accommodation services;
  • Student finance;
  • Chaplaincy/faith services.


The post holder will also contribute to projects to support student engagement and the student and applicant experience, for example: input to the Student Acquisition Strategy and to the Student Engagement Project.


Management & Supervision of Staff

  • Responsible for all aspects of line management for direct reports including (but not limited to) recruitment, induction, training, performance management, HRIS / payroll administration, development review).
  • Approve and follow correct company processes for annual leave, sick leave and other absences.



  • To fulfil the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead for ACM.



  • To assist with the delivery of and attend ACM Open Days, Inductionand ACM
  • Undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested by ACM.
  • To work in accordance with ACM’s equal opportunities and data protection policies.



This job purpose reflects the core activities of the post. As the Department and the post-holder develop, there will inevitably be some changes to the duties for which the post is responsible, and possibly to the emphasis of the post itself. ACM expects that the post-holder will recognise this and will adopt a flexible approach to work. This could include undertaking relevant training where necessary. Should significant changes to the job purpose become necessary, the post-holder will be consulted and the changes reflected in a revised job purpose.


Person Specification




Degree level or equivalent.


A recognised postgraduate qualification.

Evidence of CPD.

  • Proven experience as a manager in an educational or very similar environment.
  • Evidence of creative and innovative approaches to enhancing service delivery in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Experience of working with senior stakeholders to effect change.
  • Experience of dealing with complex issues and formulating solutions.
  • Experience of responding to critical incidents, safeguarding issues and student crises.
  • Ability to deliver results in an environment of rapid change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Proven leadership and team skills.
  • Administrative skills.
  • Excellent ICT skills appropriate to high level education administration.
