ACM Freshers’ Week 2017

Every year we treat our new intake of students to an action-packed week of live events, exclusive masterclasses and networking opportunities during Freshers’ Week. Below is a snapshot of everything on offer to our new cohort of students starting in 2017.

MASTERCLASS (DRUMS)
MARK RICHARDSON

Mark is the drummer for Skunk Anansie, with over 6 million album sales to their name. While Skunk Anansie were on a break, Mark was invited to join Feeder following the untimely death of Jon Lee, and spent 7 years recording 3 records and touring extensively with them. In 2009 Skunk Anansie reformed and, after a Greatest Hits, 3 more studio albums, and a live acoustic album, they continue to grow.

Mark invented Tunerfish Lug Locks with friend Mike Bigwood and is a major contributor to The Drumming Project conducted by Dr Marcus Smith at Chichester University studying the effects of drumming on the body and the brain.

Mark also founded Music Support, a Music Industry charity for those suffering with Mental Health and/or addiction to help anyone working at any level of the industry find help solutions to their problems.

For your late night entertainment, Sodacat opens Throwback – a band ‘doing its best to combine elements from progressive, jazz, rock and funk from the mind of an ex-dad rock, ex-metalhead, ex-bebop purist, drawing influence from everything he finds cool to listen to’. With main support from Dionna Clark, and playing into the early hours AJ Humphries – bringing his curve to covers.

Every week at The Star we host Noise Theory – our live night for ACM artists. Headlined by the Dean Parker Band – mischievous and groovin’, blues-instilled rock. The Dean Parker Band have been bringing their signature musical blend to the stage since early 2016. Catching audiences off guard each and every time, the trio have been building up a reputation for delivering sharp and ferocious live shows. With support from Dean McCaw, SunHouse and Cheri-Lyn.

Mikey Demus is the guitarist for the award winning British band Skindred. For over 15 years Mikey has toured the world, playing countless huge festivals, headlining internationally, and supporting a wide range of other artists on the road. Known for an exciting and energetic live performance, Skindred have been steadily gaining support on the international stage.

As a solo artist Rhianna wrote and recorded the hit single ‘Oh Baby’ before going on to be the opening act for Destiny’s Child and Jamiroquai. As a backing vocalist she has toured the world regularly with Faithless, Róisín Murphy, Lianne La Havas, Snarky Puppy, John Newman, Bryan Ferry and Robbie Williams.

In between touring she has worked extensively in London, New York and Sweden as a topline writer and session musician.

With over twenty years experience of working professionally in the industry she is a great example of how to build a successful career in music.

To kick off our regular acoustic sessions, George Nash, a percussive fingerstyle guitarist from the deepest seclusion of the countryside in Wales. He slams the guitar with huge power and energy from the soul with no backing tracks in the hopes to give the audience a new light on what the acoustic guitar is capable of.

Room 14 / 3pm

Virtuoso bass player Shez Raja has toured the world performing his exciting and evocative music – a sonic kaleidoscope of Indo-jazz, thundering funk, tuneful ragas and euphoric grooves. Shez regularly collaborates with stars of the international jazz scene including Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Soweto Kinch, Trilok Gurtu, Andy Sheppard and John Etheridge.

Shez started out as a highly sought-after session musician, performing at Glastonbury Festival, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Royal Festival Hall and the London Forum – and touring Europe with platinum-selling hip-hop artist MC Lyte.

OUT OF THE LOFT

Every month as part of the songwriting Loft Sessions there is an Out of the Loft gig; for this Freshers’ event we have brought together a bill of outstanding female-fronted acts. Opening is Bruch – ‘being exposed to all aspects of art and music from birth. it runs through her veins’. Main support from Bethia who is influenced hugely by artists such as Emeli Sande, Lara Larsson, Alicia Keys and Tori Kelly.

Ben Hillier’s creative and experimental approach to production has seen him work on Blur’s incredible ‘Think Tank’ and lead to him producing brilliant albums for Doves, Cinic, Elbow and Depeche Mode. Ben has also turned his hand to mixing, working on records for Editors, The Magic Numbers, Villagers and two albums for Graham Coxon.

In recent years, Ben has mixed albums for Mummy Troll, PVT and We Cut Corners, as well as producing Depeche Mode’s last album Delta Machine, and Beth Jeans Houghton’s debut.

Current projects include the new PVT album and Soffia Bjorg’s forthcoming release.

SIMON McBRIDE

From replacing Vivian Campbell in Sweet Savage (when Simon was just sixteen) to touring Europe as Ian Gillan’s guitarist, Belfast-born Simon McBride has emerged as “one of the most expressive, articulate players in the world,” (Guitarist magazine).

He has a solid fan base for his own brand of blues-meets-classic rock, releasing several highly praised albums of original material. Simon has also recorded with Don Airey (Deep Purple, Gary Moore, Colosseum II), succeeding Joe Bonamassa as Don’s guest guitarist.

Simon is a long-time endorsee of PRS guitars and has his own custom-designed single cutaway PRS.

NICK SHELDON

After studying Audio Engineering at Alchemea London, Nick Sheldon began his career at Sarm Studios in 2008, learning from Trevor Horn and the Sarm Studios family for over 2 years, gaining engineering credits on many records, most notably Jamiroquai’s Rock Dust Light Star album in 2010.

Going by ‘Sheldon’, Nick became a resident at Ministry of Sound from 2012 to 2016, gained Top 10 charting records on Beatport, a compilation album for Ministry of Sound which reached top 40 iTunes success worldwide, ongoing Radio 1 support and has been touring the globe as a DJ!

Nick joined forces with Thomas Knights and Karin Park, to begin work on new act Pandora Drive. Alongside Pandora Drive Nick is still writing and producing for many acts, including Skunk Anansie, Skin, Seamus Haji, Tensnake, Adrian Lux and Paradise City.

Our second Noise Theory of the new year brings together a lineup of rock, alternative, and loud! Support from Xero: ‘formed in Newcastle sick of the constant homogenisation of modern rock music, they have stitched a sound, woven from the fabric of their influences, that can’t be found elsewhere’. Also taking to the stage are Revelry: ‘fusing gut-punching vocal power with soft, downplayed melody’.

Launching our new monthly EDM night, bringing together a resident DJ , headliner, and our ‘introducing’ slots. This night brings Danny D’angelo: ‘his musical style is a result of house genres, minimal and techno, which bring a bit of latino sounds, funky and electro to the booth’. Hadron: ‘strongly influenced by the likes of Skrillex, Nicky Romero and Hardwell, Joshua (aka. Hadron) crafts a very unique style of Electro House’. Resident DJs are ACM alumni Barely Royal: with a long list of recent gigs including two shows on the My Nu Leng & M8’s tour, Fabric main room, and support slots for Charli XCX, Preditah & MJ Cole – he’s no stranger to a set of decks and with Outlook, Boomtown & Lockdown festival all in the pipeline.

Erik Nielsen in an artist manager and music industry consultant whose company Wingnut Music counts Elton John’s Rocket Music, James Blunt, Bryan Ferry, and leading digital analysts Music Ally amongst its clients. During his 11-year tenure with Marillion, he launched their pioneering direct-to-fan business in 1997 that became the basis for modern-day crowdfunding. Erik is also a board member and chair of education of the Music Managers Forum, a Visiting Professor at London Metropolitan University, and contributing author to the Music Management Bible.
