Featured Alumni: Ellie Fletcher – Music Production

In this instalment of our Featured Alumni series, we catch up with Music Production alumna Ellie Fletcher!

Since Ellie graduated from ACM in 2012, she’s been touring the world with Crystal Fighters; playing Jools Holland, Glastonbury Festival, and will be headlining Secret Garden Party 2017!

Hi Ellie! Tell us a bit about your background.

I’ve been working professionally from 14 years old as I attended Sylvia Young Theatre School which is a full time performing arts school where you study and simultaneously work in the industry, which was obviously great. It meant I got to perform on BBC shows as a vocalist and do things like record at Abbey Road Studios for vocal soundtracks to films, for example, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’.

At 17, I wanted to get into the more technical side of music to not feel as helpless and be another female singer looking for someone to ‘help’ them. I wanted to be able to rely on myself so I began a music technology course, which then led me onto ACM’s Music Production degree which I did while also touring with the band Crystal Fighters.

From about the age of 7 I didn’t want to do anything else other than be an artist. I’ve never faltered for a second from that, I just knew it from the get go.

What have you been involved with since leaving ACM?

I’ve been touring with the band Crystal Fighters for seven years straight now, getting to play at Glastonbury on the John Peel Stage, Coachella, perform at the 02 Arena, Jools Holland and do several world tours.

We are also headlining Secret Garden Party this year.

I have also been doing various session work. However my primary focus has always been being an artist and I have nearly finished my album under the name ‘Kyiki‘. I am now proud to say I have a studio on Sunset Blvd in LA where I now live, which is obviously a dream.

What are your aspirations for the future?

To continue gaining success and sustainability as a solo artist and producer. I want to continue to earn a living through creating.

How did your course prepare you for life in the music industry?

It gave me the room to try things out, experiment, gain the valuable skills in an array of fields and in fact something that is highlighted every year is the fact that I now work side by side with successful people who also attended ACM. It’s fantastic for developing relationships that last in the industry.

Do you have any advice for those looking to get into the industry?

Make mistakes and then don’t be disheartened by them. To be honest, you can have amazing talent, or mediocre talent, but it’s all about the way you present yourself, having true genuine drive and being ok to fail over and over again.

Procrastination and self-critiquing can be the catalyst to wanting to step onto the side of ‘reality’ and give up, but you have to push through.
