1. How was Assessment at the end of Trimester 2 affected by COVID-19? What changes did ACM make to assessment and marking as a result, if any?

The COVID-19 pandemic hit towards the tail end of Trimester 2, as ACM Guildford and Birmingham Degree students started their assessment periods. Colleagues across the organisation worked tirelessly with our education partners (Falmouth and Middlesex), and on the advice of our regulator, the Office for Students, to adapt assessments for the unprecedented situation we found ourselves in.  Our primary focus was on ensuring that no student was disadvantaged by the situation. Assessment was affected in the following ways:

Level 0 (Foundation) non-credit bearing assessments

  • Most practical assessments were postponed until the next assessment period, in Trimester 3.  We are still planning for these assessments to take place in Trimester  3, but like we have already done with MIP-003, these assessments will take place online, either by way of live stream performance or video upload via Canvas.  All other submissions took place as planned last Trimester.

Level 4

  • Most practical assessments were postponed until the next assessment period, in Trimester 3.  We are still planning for these assessments to take place in Trimester  3, but these assessments will take place online, either by way of live stream performance or video upload via Canvas.  We’ll be communicating with the students affected in the days ahead.
  • Some assessments last term at Level 4, such as MIP-404 & MIP-414, were adapted and successfully delivered as assessments within the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment.
  • MIP-405 / MIP-410 viva voces were changed from on-site practical exams to video uploads, again with Canvas.

All other submissions took place as planned.

Level 6

On the basis that Level 6 students’ programmes are to end this summer, Level 6 practical assessments were prioritised within the Trimester 2 exam schedule and took place as planned, albeit with no audience in the case of Spring Live, and with all participants observing strict social distancing and virus prevention methods.

And all other assessments also took place as planned.
