Since graduating from the Music Business Degree, Sophiella Chappell has gone from strength to strength and has recently been head hunted by Entertainment One.
We caught up with Sophiella to learn a bit more about her journey from ACM to Senior Royalties Analyst at the Canadian Record Label…
Tell us a bit about yourself. Why did you want to work in the music industry?
“My Dad is a musician and owned a music shop when I was very young which inevitably sparked an interest. Growing up me and my siblings were encouraged to try different instruments and explore the arts. I trained as a Dancer but loved going to gigs and getting involved in any way I could with live music. Music was always, in some form or another, ubiquitous within my day to day life and I was always keen to learn more about the industry.”
Tell us about what you’ve been up to since leaving ACM?
“I finished ACM in July 2015 and at the same time had just finished my internship at Peer Music Publishing. I began working as a Music Royalties Assistant for one of the largest Music and entertainments firms in the UK. After 2 years I was head hunted to join Entertainment One, a Canadian record label and global entertainment distribution company, as their Senior Royalties Analyst.”
How did you get started working in royalties?
“Really I wanted to use my early years to experience working in different areas of the music business but working in Royalties really caught my attention. It’s a real technically challenging job and an extremely niche part of the industry. There’s always something to learn, especially given the change in music consumption and the continuous challenges labels and artists face to exploit and monetise their music safely.”
What are your aspirations for the future?
“I’d like to lead a successful team and continue to exercise and develop my knowledge and professional skills.”
How did your course help prepare you for life in the music industry and what did you enjoy the most about studying at ACM?
“The Music Business course really was invaluable. The content and the opportunities and experiences it provided during my studies set me apart from other candidates during those early post grad days. I really enjoyed the vast nature of content within the course with total relevance across the whole of the music industry… the lecturers were also wonderful and so personable.”
What motivated you to come and study at ACM?
“The course structure, the industry links ACM has and the environment of the university as a whole.”
