In this instalment of our Featured Alumni series, we catch up with ACM Vocals alum and founder of Princess Slayer, Casey Lim!
Casey Lim graduated from ACM in 2013 with a BMus (Hons) in Music Performance. Since then, she’s formed Princess Slayer along with fellow alumni Vince Welch (Music Performance Degree, 2012) and performs live with Harry Clarke, Jamie Stuart and Tom Frankson (Music Performance Degree, 2013).
Princess Slayer are a live electronic and dance act. As they put it, you can ‘expect a healthy serving of Deep Bass and Beats from the Soul’.
Hi Casey! Tell us a bit about your background.
For the past 9 years I’ve been involved in writing, performing and event organising. I love music and the people who create and work with it.
What have you been involved with since leaving ACM?
Princess Slayer has been my main project since leaving ACM – we’re a live electronica band. I write the vocals and co-write songs with the producer Vince. I also co-manage with Jacky Lim.
What are your aspirations for the future?
The main goal is to continue creating whilst enjoying the process.
How did your course prepare you for life in the music business?
Being at ACM gave me access to other people, which I think is the most valuable asset a musician can have. The course material inspired my intellect and imagination, whilst the other students and tutors gave me the opportunity to grow as a working musician.
Do you have any advice for those looking to get into the industry?
Make sure you’re constantly checking in with yourself to confirm that you’re pursuing the right thing for you. Know your worth, work hard and be grateful for everything you have.
What motivated you to come and study at ACM?
I attended the part-time course whilst I was still at school and applied for the full-time course pretty soon after that. There was so much energy in that building and I knew studying music further would make me happy.
What was the best part about studying at ACM?
Exploring musical styles and theories that I had never heard of before and making life-long relationships with some awesome people.
Connect with Princess Slayer on their website and on Facebook.
