ACM will be running week long sessions dedicated to helping you improve your music theory skills.

Music Theory Bootcamp – Equivalent to Grade 5 Music Theory

  • Course Fee – £195
  • Date: Starts Monday 21st July 2014
  • Duration: 5 Days

The course covers all aspects of music theory required to successfully study on the ACM Higher Education Programmes. Students will also be taught ways to develop their perception of pitch, harmony and rhythm, sharpening up the skills needed to transcribe, compose and perform music. Now successfully into its third year of delivery, this fun, intensive course is a proven way of rapidly improving both music theory and aural perception skills.

  • Time signatures, including irregular meters/bars.
  • The stave (developing knowledge of SATB formation).
  • Key signatures and chordal patterns, looking further at the tonic, supertonic, subdominant and dominant chords and their functions.
  • All major and minor scales.
  • Composition; developing melodic and harmonic ideas.
  • Terms and signs; developing knowledge on the terminology used in notation.

The Music Theory Bootcamp course is based on ACM’s acclaimed Higher Diploma syllabus and will result in students receiving the equivalent of Grade 5 standard of Music Theory (i.e. equivalent to such boards as ABRSM, Trinity and LCM).

This course is also suitable for applicants to gain access to ACM Degree programmes.

Sight Reading and Music Notation

  • Course Fee – £195
  • Date: Starts Monday 28th July 2014
  • Duration: 5 Days

To successfully undertake a Higher Education music course, you need to be comfortable with both reading and notating music. If your sight reading or notation skills need refining, this is the perfect opportunity to learn how to read and notate music, followed by the chance to apply these new skills in cross discipline performance workshops. Led by our team of music industry professionals, you will quickly learn to negotiate your way around simple written examples, which will gradually increae in difficulty as the week progresses.

Technique and Improvisation

  • Course Fee – £195
  • Date: Starts Monday 4th August 2014
  • Duration: 5 Days

World class musicians know that good technique and a positive mental approach are crucial to underpinning any performance, especially one which requires you to think on your feet. This short practical course will lead you through a series of musical scenarios, broken down into preparation and application classes. Each day will focus on the technique and approach needed for the task ahead, culminating in a cross discipline performance workshop, where you will get the opportunity to play under the guidance of some of the UK’ s most gifted improvising musicians. This course is perfect preparation for HE level study, but is equally useful for working musicians wishing to improve their technique and improvisation skills.
