Bass Tutors
The following Bass Guitar Tutors are available to students on our bass courses at ACM. Our bass school consists of:Nik Preston, Paul Geary, Joe Hubbard, Diego Kovadloff, Mike Nichols, Mike Dunn, Paul Francis, Pat Hughes, Roger Davis, Vic Cox and Stefan Redtenbacher. Nik Preston - Director of Education
Nik is a freelance electric and double bass player. He won a Perrier Young Musician Award whilst studying at The Royal Academy and has gone on to perform and record for artists such as Imelda May, Julian Lloyd Webber, Fraser T Smith, Chad Jackson and John Blackwell whilst performing alongside members of Amy Winehouse’s band, Jamiroquai, Incognito, Level 42 and Jamie Cullum. Nik is regularly featured on national T.V. and radio shows such as Parkinson, Clive Anderson, Loose Ends and Artsworld. He also recently played for the premiere and promo of the Hollywood blockbuster ‘Australia’ and has recently recorded for Chad Jackson’s 20th Anniversary version of ‘Hear The Drummer Get Wicked’. Nik has regularly recorded for Guitar Techniques publications alongside artists such as Guthrie Govan and Pete Callard.
Diego Kovadloff - Lecturer
Diego is best known for his work as leader of Lomo. He has also collaborated with William Topley and DJ Oliverio amongst many others. He is an experienced and committed teacher, producer, composer and performer.
Mike Nichols - Lecturer
Mike plays bass guitar, double bass and keyboard; and is an experienced composer, arranger and bass tutor. Mike’s interest in world music has also led him to study and perform with musicians in Gambia, Ghana and Cuba. Mike has worked with many artists including; the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Joe Brown, Pete and Sam Brown, Mark Knopfler, Jools Holland, Dennis Locorriere, The Supremes, The Drifters and Opera North.
He has worked in many West End shows including; Avenue Q, Dirty Dancing, Grease, Les Miserables, Jersey Boys and Never Forget; as well as touring shows such as; Grease, Cats, Bad Girls and Sweet Soul Music. Mike’s education work includes; bass tutor at the Academy of Contemporary Music and contributions to Total Guitar magazine. Mike’s electronica album ‘Planet Zebidee’ was released in 2008.
Paul Francis - Lecturer
Paul has been a professional bassist since 1979 and has recorded and toured extensively in that time with credits including artists such as Paul Weller, The James Taylor Quartet, Midge Ure, Galliano, Omar, Michelle Gayle and Ian Hunter. Apart from teaching as a bass tutor at the Academy, Paul still manages to maintain a busy studio and gigging schedule and has contributed to many magazines.
Roger Davis - Lecturer
Roger has many years of recording and performing experience. He has recorded six albums with rock outfit Marshall Law (labelled 'hardest working British band' by Kerrang) having particular success in Japan, Europe and South America. He has toured alongside artists such as Thunder, Uriah Heap, Saxon, Battlezone, Annihilator, Hellion, T.N.T, Magnum, Yngwie Malmsteen, Sabbatt, Candlemass, Little Angels as well as recording, producing and touring extensively with Toby Jepson (ex –Little Angels). Currently working with Lady K and Natascha Sohl alongside Mike Goodman and Joe Yoshida. He has also worked with Chesney Hawkes and written with top producer Steve Harris (Dave Matthews Band, U2, Kaiser Chiefs). Roger is Head of Part Time School, a bass tutor on our bass guitar courses, and is one of the live performance team at ACM.
Stefan Redtenbacher – Lecturer
Stefan is an alumni of the Vienna Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. His recording and performing credits include; Sam Brown, Steve Winwood, Amy Winehouse, Herb Alpert, Kaci, Limahl, Taka Boom, and Reeves Gabrels. Stefan’s band, the RB Funkestra have recorded with funk legends like Fred Wesley, ‘Doc’ Kupka, Lee Thornburg from Tower of Power as well as the horn sections from Incognito and The Brand New Heavies. Stefan has just released his third album ‘Redtenbacher’s Hausmusik’.
Paul Geary - Commercial Development Manager
Paul graduated with honours from Berklee College of Music in Boston USA, and also the M.I.T Musicians Institute of Technology in Los Angeles California. Voted ‘Best New Musician’ by the British Music Association in 1993, Paul has worked with a vast array of artists including George Michael, The Lighthouse Family, Lisa Stansfield and Simply Red. Paul has also been a music director for artists and bands such as Sophie Ellis Bexter, Liberty X, the Blazing Squad and Rachel Stevens. As a bass tutor at ACM Paul offers students on our bass course a vast amount of knowledge.
Joe Hubbard - Senior Lecturer
Joe Hubbard’s professional background is represented by a collective body of experience that spans over more than three decades as an internationally acclaimed bass guitarist, teacher/clinician and contemporary jazz fusion recording artist.Aside from recording and touring as a “sideman” backing up stellar and diverse performers including Gary Numan, George Benson, Elkie Brooks, Roger Chapman, Morrissey Mullen, Everything But the Girl and Denny Laine, Joe is also a well-known recording artist where he has written, arranged and co-produced three internationally recognised jazz fusion CDs.
Joe has also been acknowledged by music business insiders as the premier bass guitar teacher in the UK having taught some of the most prestigious bass players in the business including Pino Paladino. He is also a published author having written one of the best selling bass guitar books ever – Basslines!
As a seasoned veteran with thousands of gigs under his belt, Joe’s mission is to further spread the tentacles of his music – as a bass guitarist, teacher/clinician and recording artist – integrating this legacy with new elements and expressing it creatively into the future!

Mike Dunn - Lecturer
Mike has been a professional bass player for nearly 20 years, and has had a successful freelance career that spans over three continents. Orginally from Toronto, Mike has had vast experience with touring, performing live at recording sessions, depping for London musicals, and leading his own corporate function band called Everyday People. Mike now also passes on his knowledge as an ACM bass tutor.
Pat Hughes - Lecturer
Pat is a highly technical player and bass tutor with an extensive amount of live experience. He has worked with legendary drum & bass producer Ray Keith as well as regularly performing live with rockers East of Java and boogaloo outfit The Filthy Six. Pat has also written a series of articles for Bassist magazine, and has appeared on Channel 4 and the Musicians Channel.
Vic Cox - Lecturer
Vic has vast experience of playing in professional and semi professional bands, performing at numerous corporate events for clients such as British Telecom, Tesco, Shell and Sky TV, as well as having enjoyed a healthy relationship with the pub and club circuit. His writing and recording experience includes work with Andy Wickett (ex- Duran Duran and TV Eye) and Paul Reeson (Ex – Psychic TV), and Spotlight Cannibal (with members of Without Grace). Specialising in rock, funk and soul, Vic’s main bands have included Wildwood, Billy2Mates and Dr Funkenstein and the Feelgood Factor, and he is currently working with rootsy blues guitarist and didg player Billy Irvine on writing and recording original material. As well as a member of the ACM LPW team, he is also Bass Tutor with Surrey Arts and Alton College.
