ACM Business School @ Midem 2010

Business School
Mission Statement:

To educate, motivate, innovate and inspire entrepreneurial spirit in today’s students, the business leaders of tomorrow.

Welcome to the ACM Business School @ Midem page - Each year The ACM Business School takes twenty of its students off to Midem (the Music Industry equivalent of the Cannes Film festival) which is one of the most exciting music conference and sales forums worldwide.

Since 2004, Midem has supported the development of new business start-ups. Acknowledging that today's young innovators are tomorrow's business entrepreneurs, and that education plays a vital role in developing a healthy industry, is what has made Midem the leading music industry networking event. Midem understands the importance of making and sustaining business contacts, partners and friends from all over the world, and attendees come from a varied background, sharing one thing in common: a passion to succeed, to face a changing industry with verve and a fresh vision, whilst embracing change.

Since the students on the ACM Music Business School started working with Midem seven years ago, I have seen first hand the impact of Midem on eager business minds keen to network and find their way in the music industry. Midem is the catalyst for many people.

— Helen Gammons, MBA
- Head of the ACM Music Business School

Conference, Exhibitions and Experience

In addition to Midem the ACM Business School attends Musexpo, The Great Escape, In the City and are members of the MMF. As a result of applied academic work, best business practice and the encouragement of students to learn through the 'lived experience' we see our students and Alumni achieving real success right the way through the Music and Media industry both in the UK and worldwide.

Student Successes

A song from one of our 1st year degree students has made it into the final MTV synchronisation forum! What a fantastic result! Well done to Anil and Arcady Bliss. We have also been asked to a series of meetings with companies looking for interns. The Business School's students are highly prized and obtain work experience, interships, and start their own businesses. Many Alumni are employed in top companies such as Universal, iTunes, Sony, Ministry of Sound, MMF, PPL, MCPS and Peer Music. The list is endless.

Thanks to Midem my networks are now worldwide, and after my fourth year as an attendee, my knowledge and contacts have increased dramatically. If there is one place where you can think outside the box it’s definitely here. Remember it’s not what you know, it’s who you know

I will no doubt use the skills I have learnt from going to MIDEM and the ACM Business School for the rest of life, not forgetting to mention the contacts and potential business partners as well!

ACM Business School Alumni: Simon McEvoy (BA Hons '07) - Managing Director, Tangent One

ACM Business School Alumni: Simon McEvoy"All the great business advice, tutoring and international input which I received at Midem has been invaluable to our success."

After graduating from the ACM Business School, Simon went on to work for Tangent One (Levi, Nintendo, SAP and FireTrap) and only six months later he was offered the opportunity to head up a new office in Australia. When asked how he felt about the opportunity, Simon replied, " I jumped at it".

His time at the ACM Business School gave him the ability to create a new company, develop online marketing campaigns and write detailed business plans. With much insight and great aptitude Simon has interpreted all this knowledge into a new and exciting career path.

“Ultimately you never know where you'll end up in life, so making the most of what lands up on your lap is what's important. Try and stay as flexible as possible as the creative industry is full of highs and lows and not everyone will end up with their dream music industry job”.

ACM Business School Alumni: Neil Johnston (BA Hons '08) – Storevan Music, supported by the Princes Trust

ACM Business School Alumni: Neil Johnston "In 2008, my first year at MIDEM, I developed relationships with key industry figures, had dinner on Brian May's yacht with Iron Maiden and Queen's stockbroker, who then introduced me to two publishers. Within a month of returning to the UK, I was pitching music to a Grammy award winning artist and composing for TV! This is what Midem is like when you’re focused and determined to do something with your life"

Neil’s business Store Van Music offers bespoke compositions for international clients, with works such as radio ident’s, film scores, television commercials, theatrical introductions and contemporary popular music writing.

Neil was awarded the largest amount of money ever released by Prince’s Trust for a start up loan! This has helped Store Van Music to secure new business premises which will allow the business to expand in the amount of works produced, and deliver it at the highest quality.

ACM Business School Alumni: Nick Brown (BA Hons '09) - Business Owner, GEM (a new live UK venue)

ACM Business School Alumni: Nick Brown "Midem has done wonders for me in both business and networking terms. Each year that I have attended Midem since 2007, my business confidence has grown and has helped me network at other international music events. I look forward to many more years of furthering my business through Midem."

February 2010 sees the opening of Watfords 'newest bar and nightclub GEM which is the brainchild of ACM Business School graduate Nick Brown. Having performed as an artist himself and worked in management and promotion, Nick hopes to bring fresh, young talent to Watford, aims to be the biggest supporter of a new, cutting edge live music scene bringing artists from all over the country.
